Donald Trump keeps taking actions against Canada. Here is an article about that from the Associated Press:
Trump imposes 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, citing disputes over autos, alcohol and cheese
July 20, 2026
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Monday imposed 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, declaring that Canada has unfairly discriminated against American autos, alcohol and dairy products.
The move could unleash a new wave of economic chaos, with risks of higher inflation and further fraying of relations between two nations that had been closely woven together before Trump’s return to the White House. The administration official previewing the action said that Canada was one of the only nations other than China that retaliated against Trump’s previous tariffs and must be held accountable.
The official insisted on anonymity on a call with reporters to preview the president’s actions and said that Trump signed three proclamations to launch the tariffs under Section 338 of the 1930 Trade Act. Several Democratic lawmakers last year proposed repealing the section because they said Trump could use it to destabilize the economy.
The new 50% tariffs would exclude energy products, potash, fish and critical minerals, but they would include goods that had previously been protected from import taxes by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA. That 2020 trade pact was not renewed by the U.S., triggering a new set of negotiations that could run until 2036. …
The Trump administration official said the president had also requested that his aides look into additional tariffs on Canada because its wildfires hurt air quality in the U.S. He had publicly threatened to do so in social media posts.
At the World Cup final on Sunday, Trump watched the game with Carney. The Trump administration official said their time together at the game was not a working visit to discuss trade and tariffs.
Trump claims in the proclamations that Canada discriminates against American autos, alcohol and cheese relative to other nations, but his argument rests in large part on retaliatory actions taken by Canada after the U.S. president imposed tariffs on Canada under the pretext that it should do more to stop fentanyl smuggling.
Trump noted in his autos proclamation that Canada maintained, starting in April 2025, a 25% tariff on the imports of U.S. motor vehicles that did not qualify for preferential treatment under the USMCA.
The White House said that, regarding alcohol, all but two Canadian provinces and territories halted the purchase and retailing of American alcoholic beverages beginning last year, which was also a response to Trump’s tariffs and taunts of making Canada the 51st state.
But Trump has long objected to Canada’s treatment of U.S. cheese, saying in his proclamation that Canada discriminates against the U.S. compared to Europe on dairy products.
The White House said in a fact sheet that the tariffs would go into effect in 30 days, meaning there is time for negotiations as Trump has not always followed through on his announced tax hikes on imports. https://apnews.com/article/trump-canada-50-tariff-autos-alcohol-cheese-ca268ef24992b16695954c4c2e5eae6a
Canada is not pleased.
How did Canada respond to the new US tariff plan?
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the US tariffs are “in direct violation” of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), “the free trade agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico.”
The implications of the tariffs extend beyond Canada, according to Scott Lincicome, vice president of general economics at the libertarian Cato Institute in Washington, D.C. He warned in comments also to AP that the measures would inject “massive uncertainty” into the global economy and affect a range of US trading partners.
“We crossed the Rubicon,” Lincicome said, describing the use of Section 338 as “the nuclear option for Trump tariffs.” …
The latest tariff measures reflect broader tensions between the two countries. Trump earlier in his second term mocked Canada and said it should be the 51st US state, sparking backlash from Canadians and pushback from Carney. https://www.dw.com/en/trump-tariffs-canada-50-percent/a-78042667
Here is something I posted here in March of 2025:
Canada is in a precarious position these days and Donald Trump seems willing to try to cause Canada a lot of economic pain to get it to accede to his demands. Canada’s economy is highly dependent upon the USA’s economy, not the other way around. Some American’s see Donald Trump’s actions as overdue, whereas others see bullying and other unsavory tactics being used. (Thiel B. Canada’s new PM & hurting feelings of foreigners via Donald Trump’s presidency. COGwriter, March 10, 2025)
Yes, Donald Trump has used the threat of pain as part of his bullying tactics.
Why?
Because he thinks he can.
And while he can, to a degree, do not think that there is no cost to that.
Notice also a report related to India”
Indian farmers march to Delhi to protest US trade deal
21 July 2026
Thousands of farmers opposing a proposed trade deal with the US marched toward Delhi on Tuesday, presenting another challenge to the government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is already facing a student protest in the capital.
The farmers’ unions say New Delhi’s proposed trade deal could hurt India’s agriculture sector by opening the door to cheaper American food and hurt domestic farmers, livestock and dairy producers, as well as small traders.
The trade deal is still not final despite months of negotiations. Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal said last month that New Delhi “cannot enter into force a US deal” until the “framework for getting a competitive advantage is finalized.”
Farm organizations from the northern states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are spearheading the protests. Farmers from Punjab were stopped by police in Shambhu, on the state’s border with Haryana. However, others have continued on to Delhi. https://www.rt.com/india/643297-indian-farmers-march-delhi/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=RSS
The Trump Administration continues to push friends and others to question being allies.
What has been happening is consistent with setting up the following to be fulfilled:
1 How lonely sits the city
That was full of people!
How like a widow is she,
Who was great among the nations!
The princess among the provinces
Has become a slave!2 She weeps bitterly in the night,
Her tears are on her cheeks;
Among all her lovers
She has none to comfort her.
All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies. (Lamentations 1:1-2)
The USA continues to push nations away from it.
Many nations are taking steps.
Europe is rearming and making trade deals.
Canada has made several overtures to the European Union related to these matters (e.g. see First ever EU-Armenia summit–50 nations including Canada meet for European Political Community and European Union and Canada coordinating digital identification scheme?)–and some in the EU have interest in Canada (e.g. European Council President António Costa in Serbia and pushing for speeding entrance of Balkan states into the EU; Plus Finland’s President proposed inviting Canada to the European Union).
Donald Trump’s trade tactics pushed the EU and India to make a trade deal together that they had long put off.
Here are some parts of my 2025 article 26 items to prophetically watch in 2026:
8. Trade
Not all warfare is militaristic. There is also economic warfare.
This often involves trade.
The major use of sanctions, mainly pushed by the USA, has been continuing.
This is affecting trade and pushing trade away from the USA. …
And Europe?
Donald Trump’s tariffs, threats, etc. are a major concern for Europe and its trade.
In 2018, I wrote:
The Europeans have been working with Latin America, China, Russia’s Eurasian Union, and other areas of the world to try to set up its dominance of world trade as well as standards for world trade. (19 items to prophetically watch in 2019)
Such deals have been happening. But expect more concrete action, at least partially because of the reelection of Donald Trump, along with J.D. Vance.
Europe will reach out to various ones in Asia and Africa, as well as Latin America. In the next several years, deals and more trade will occur with Africa, Asia, Mexico, and South America. …
Expect more trade conflict between Europe and the USA.
The Bible shows that Europe will, for a time, dominate trade (cf. Revelation 17 and 18).
Europe will get more serious about trade deals with others internationally, such as being more motivated to approve the trade deal with the Mercosur block of South America.
That said, in 2026 Europe will work on getting more of the world to accept its standards and trading matters. This will help Europe ultimately dominate trade.
For a time, Babylon will dominate world trade:
2 And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! 3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.” (Revelation 18:2-3).
While ‘Babylon’ will not fully reign in 2026, with the USA pulling out of trade deals and/or wishing to change them, steps are occurring that are pushing Europe to dominate trade (watch Trade Wars: Are COG warnings coming to pass?).
Expect Europe to reach out to various Gentile nations in Asia, Africa, South America, and elsewhere to make trade deals.
The final time of the Gentiles is approaching. We are seeing BRICS, the Global South, the EU, and others working on ways to trade and not have to deal with the descendants of Ephraim (UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) and Manasseh (the USA).
The Europeans will work with many nations to secure stronger trade agreements.
Consider the following deals that the EU has accelerated and/or made since Donald Trump began his second term in office:
EU–Mercosur Provisionally applied from May 2026
EU–Mexico (modernized) Signed May 2026
EU–Australia Negotiations concluded 2026
EU–India Negotiations concluded January 2026–formal signing planned later in 2026 per announcement from Ursula von der Leyen today June 17, 2026
EU – Islands in Indian Ocean Modernised the Economic Partnership Agreement with Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles in June 2026
EU-Turkey Meeting 4 June 2026 for a reinforced trade partnership to set up for High Level Dialogue on Trade in October 2026
EU–Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement Acceleration to finalize announced 5 June 2026
Several African regional agreements Continued progress, some awaiting signatures or ratifications
EU-South Korea Digital trade agreement signed 10 June 2026
EU-Gulf States In progress
EU-ASEAN nations In progress

Donald Trump has bullied Canada and many others.
Newton’s Third Law of Motion is for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
In the case of Donald Trump there continue to be unintended consequences of his statements, threats, and actions.
There is a cost to such.
This is getting many nations looking to trade more with Europe and and others. More and more are trying to figure out how to thrive with less trade with the USA.
