Israel, Hezbollah exchange fire, US embassy in Kuwait hit

The US-Israeli air war against Iran has expanded, engulfing Lebanon, with Israel responding to strikes by Hezbollah, while Tehran fired missiles and drones at Israel, Gulf states and a British air base in Cyprus.
The US military said Kuwait’s air defences had mistakenly shot down three American F-16 fighters during an Iranian attack.
All six crew members were safely recovered.
A US base and a power station in Kuwait were also targeted, in what was the most dramatic escalation for the small Gulf country in decades, after the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and Baghdad’s attempt to take over Kuwait in 1990.

A favourite tactic of war is to try to decapitate the enemy leadership. While such strategies might work in certain contexts, in the Middle East, they have proven to be a disastrous choice.
For sure, the assassination of an enemy leader might give a quick boost of popularity amid war. Certainly, United States President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are basking in the limelight of their perceived “success” in assassinating Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
But killing an 86-year-old man who had already been planning his succession due to his ill health is not that much of a feat considering the overwhelming firepower that the US and Israel together possess. More importantly, eliminating him does not necessarily mean that what follows would be a leadership or a regime that would accommodate Israeli and US interests.
That is because leadership assassinations do not lead to peaceful outcomes in the Middle East. They can open the door for much more radical successors or for chaos that leads to violence and upheaval.
A brief glance at recent history shows that whenever Israel and the US have tried the idea of leadership “decapitation” in various conflicts in the region, the results have been disastrous. In the case of Iraq, its leader Saddam Hussein was captured by US forces and handed over to allied Iraqi forces who executed him. Scientists have warned us that even in a scenario in which only a very limited number of nuclear weapons are used, a “nuclear winter” would be produced which would last for multiple years. Global food production would plummet and hundreds of millions of people would starve to death. So a limited nuclear exchange would not just be catastrophic for the particular nations that are directly involved. Ultimately, it would be a global cataclysm of epic proportions. …
Since the 1980s, it has been well understood that a full-blown nuclear war between the United States and Russia would produce a nightmarish “nuclear winter” which could potentially kill billions of people…
But what about a limited nuclear war?
Would that cause a “nuclear winter” too?
A study that was conducted in 2014 envisioned a limited nuclear exchange in which each side detonated just 50 15-kiloton weapons. Yes, the “nuclear winter” that would be produced would not be as severe as one that would be produced by a full-blown war between the United States and Russia, but it would still be horrific. In fact, the authors of the study concluded that we would see “five to 10 consecutive Years Without a Summer and more than a decade of significantly reduced crop yields”…
The effects would be similar to what happened after the greatest volcanic eruption in history, the 1815 Tambora eruption in Indonesia. The cooling from this eruption triggered the infamous Year Without a Summer in 1816 in the Northern Hemisphere, when killing frosts disrupted agriculture every month of the summer in New England, creating terrible hardship. Exceptionally cold and wet weather in Europe triggered widespread harvest failures, resulting in famine and economic collapse.
However, the cooling effect of that eruption only lasted about three years. Cooling from a limited nuclear exchange would cause five to 10 consecutive Years Without a Summer and more than a decade of significantly reduced crop yields. Killing frosts would reduce growing seasons by 10-40 days per year for five years at midlatitudes. Global precipitation would fall 6% during the first five years and be reduced by 4.5% 10 years later, resulting in a crippling increase in regional droughts. Over the Asian monsoon region, including the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia, annual rainfall would fall by 20-80%, so that even the “winner” of the nuclear war between India and Pakistan would experience devastating famine from the failure of the life-giving monsoon rains.
Destruction of ozone would lead to another global calamity. As smoke in the stratosphere absorbed sunlight, the stratosphere would heat by 30 degrees Celsius (54°F). In the hot stratosphere, chemical reactions would destroy ozone, causing global ozone losses of 20-50% over populated areas. Ultraviolet light would increase by 30-80% over the midlatitudes, likely causing widespread damage to human health, agriculture, and terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
Just think about those numbers for a moment.
They are based on the detonation of just 100 nuclear warheads.

We are currently in the midst of a historic global food crisis. Hundreds of millions of people around the world go to bed hungry every night, and the lack of food has become particularly severe in deeply impoverished nations such as Somalia…
By now it should be apparent to everyone that this is just the beginning.

Israel has nuclear weapons, which it could use. Iran may or may not have one, but it does have materials to make what is called a ‘dirty bomb.’
A dirty bomb is a weapon that contains radioactive materials–it is NOT the same as a nuclear bomb and it is not nearly as devastating–though it can render an area unsafe to live in for a long time.

And the effects continue: 92% of Afghans are still food insecure and nearly 3 in 10 Afghan children will face acute malnutrition this year. …

Hunger as a Cause of War
Famine is the nightmarish version of the gift that just keeps giving. Hungry people are more likely to resort to violence to solve their problems. War-afflicted Yemen is a case in point. In that country, the U.S. funded and armed the Saudi military in its air strikes against the Houthi-led rebels that began in 2015 and went on for years (a role now taken over by my country). One child under five is still estimated to die every 10 minutes from malnutrition and related causes there, in large part because war has so decimated the country’s food production and distribution infrastructure. Since war first struck Yemen, the country’s economy has halved, and nearly 80% of the population is now dependent on humanitarian aid. A direct consequence of the unrest has been the flourishing of Islamic extremist groups like the Houthis. Countries facing hunger and food instability are, in fact, more likely to be politically unstable and experience more numerous protests, some of them violent.

Jesus said:

And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:4-8)
The rides of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse (Revelation 6:1-8) relate to what Jesus warned would happen.

Although, according to Jesus, the time of sorrows is not one to trouble Christians, notice something else that He did say:
34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:34-36)
Worse things are coming, and Jesus stated what He said He wanted all of His people to be doing. So, watch, pray, and get ready.
