Did the first Christians use images of Jesus? This short clip examines what early Christian writers taught about idolatry, why religious images were initially opposed, and how attitudes toward images changed in later centuries following the time of Constantine and Helena.
TRANSCRIPT
Now the early church was warned not to associate with any Christian who was involved with idolatry. And pictures of Jesus were not endorsed by even Greco-Roman Catholic leaders despite the fact that Jesus walked on the earth. The New Testament warns that idolaters are considered to be heathen and should be judged that way. The church writers of the second century even unfaithful ones wrote against idols and idolatry. Yet because of Constantine and his mother Helena images started to become popular.
