The battle to open the Temple Mount on Shabbat and the High Holidays

Assaf Fried has spent years documenting something most Israelis never think about: the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism, is closed to Jewish visitors every single Shabbat (the Sabbath). Not for security reasons or because of an active threat. It is closed because the day is holy to Jews, and the government has decided that holiness itself is the reason to keep the gates shut. On Thursday evening, Fried is bringing that argument to a public rally in Jerusalem, demanding that a government led by the political right finally reverse a policy no left-wing government invented and no right-wing government has fixed.
“There is no operational reason, no security reason,” Fried said in an interview with Israel365 News. “The holiest place for Jews is open to Muslims on the day they call their day of rest, even though they do not observe Shabbat. And the holiest place for Jews is closed on the day that is holy to us.”
“It’s not only closed to Jews on Shabbat,” Fried said. “It’s also closed to Christians on Shabbat. Also closed to tourists on Shabbat, absolutely.” The distinction matters: this is not a grievance that belongs to one religious community. It is a blanket closure of the Temple Mount to non-Muslims of every background, one day a week, with no security rationale offered.
A Policy Born From Violence, Never From Law
Jewish access to the Temple Mount on Shabbat was not always restricted. Fried, who has interviewed dozens of witnesses and reviewed the historical record, said Jews prayed and visited the site on Shabbat under British Mandate rule and continued to do so after the Six-Day War in 1967, when the Mount came under Israeli control. “I personally went up to the Temple Mount for the first time in 1991,” Fried said. “Not many Jews went up to the Mount then, but it was open on Shabbat. I have taken testimonies from many people who told me they went up on Shabbat, because there was much less scrutiny back then.”
That access ended in September 2000, after then-opposition leader Ariel Sharon visited the Temple Mount and the Second Intifada erupted. Yes, religious Jews feel betrayed by their own government.
But, there are some in office that are sympathetic to them, such as National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is a leader in the Otzma Yehudit, ‘Jewish Power,’ party.
He favors the building of a Jewish temple, deportation of ‘enemies’ from Israel, and ascending the ‘Temple Mount.’ He favors, and endorsed, giving Jews the right to bring prayer books to what is called the Temple Mount (see Israeli police allow Jewish prayer books on the ‘Temple Mount’: A sign of a third temple or that a change to allow sacrifices can happen?). He was criticized publicly by the Biden Administration (e.g. see Ben Gvir is criticized for going to ‘Temple Mount’ and is being pressured to push for Jewish Passover sacrifice) and other US political leaders (see US leaders pushing against Ben Gvir, but one day a religiously influential leader will be successful in renewing animal sacrifices) for his views and actions.
In Israel, they have a multi-party parliamentary political system. And in order to have a coalition government, the leading party often must make deals with small parties. This led to Ben-Gvir’s current position, despite the fact that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had spoken against Ben-Gvir previously–politics makes strange bedfellows according to an old saying.
Religious Jews are having increasing impact in Jerusalem.
This will increase.
Why?
Because, biblically, we know that the daily animal sacrifices will be re-implemented by certain Jews as the prophet Daniel was inspired to numerous times that they would be stopped:
9 And out of one of them came a little horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Glorious Land. 10 And it grew up to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled them. 11 He even exalted himself as high as the Prince of the host; and by him the daily sacrifices were taken away, and the place of His sanctuary was cast down. 12 Because of transgression, an army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast truth down to the ground. He did all this and prospered.
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said to that certain one who was speaking, “How long will the vision be, concerning the daily sacrifices and the transgression of desolation, the giving of both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot?”
14 And he said to me, “For two thousand three hundred days; then the sanctuary shall be cleansed.” (Daniel 8:9-14)
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering … (Daniel 9:27)31 And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation. (Daniel 11:31)
11 “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days. (Daniel 12:11)
For these sacrifices to be stopped, they obviously must first be started.
Increased religious zeal and political considerations look to be a factor in that happening.
One day, consistent with several prophecies in the Book of Daniel (Daniel 9:27, 11:31, 12:11), animal sacrifices will be reimplemented.
