Migration expert: Refugees cannot flee to Europe despite Iran war

Migration expert Gerald Knaus does not expect an increase in refugees arriving in Europe despite the ongoing attacks on Iran.
Countries such as Turkey have fortified their borders, meaning there are currently no escape routes for people fleeing the conflict, Knaus told Deutschlandfunk radio on Wednesday.
“If we have borders guarded by soldiers with orders to shoot, then even the most desperate people in the world cannot leave their country,” the chairman of the European Stability Initiative (ESI) think tank said.

Europe Offers Little Hope for People in Iran Trying to Flee US and Israeli Bombs

In 2015, hundreds of thousands of Syrians who were fleeing the civil war in their home country sought asylum or refugee status in Europe. Germany and Sweden, in particular, admitted large numbers of these war refugees. But, in the years that followed, far right anti-immigration parties — including Marine Le Pen’s National Rally in France; the Alternative for Germany party (AfD) in Germany; and Meloni’s Brothers of Italy Party — built their bases on campaigns of xenophobia, and support for them surged. Seeking to neutralize the appeal of the far right, more mainstream leaders began co-opting the latter’s anti-immigrant stances, acceding to arguments by the AfD, in particular, that millions of migrants should be “re-migrated” back to their home countries.
In 2024, the European Parliament ratified the Pact on Migration and Asylum, making it easier for member states to deport would-be asylum seekers. In late 2025, the pact was amended to expand the list of third countries that asylees have transited through that they could now be deported back into. Cumulatively, these rule changes will allow for fast-track hearings (and deportations) for residents from a slew of poor, mainly southern hemisphere countries seeking refuge in Europe. The provisions of the new pact and the third country rule will kick in this summer. Amnesty International has denounced it as a “shameless attempt to sidestep international legal obligations.” …
With most of Europe now firmly committed to a lockdown model that keeps desperate people caught in war zones far from the continent’s shores, and with the United States having all but ended its admission of refugees and asylum seekers, the outlook is particularly bleak for those seeking safety from U.S. bombs. European Parliament Committee Backs Tougher Asylum Return Rules In Right-Wing Migration Win

The European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs voted on Monday to adopt a harder line on asylum returns.
The committee voted 41 to 32, with one abstention, in favor of implementing a single framework for handling third-country nationals staying illegally in European Union member states.
The majority was formed by the European People’s Party (EPP) together with right-wing groups, including the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), Patriots for Europe (PfE), and the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) group.
Lawmakers from the Socialists and Democrats, Renew Europe, the Greens, and the Left opposed the measure.
The proposed regulation would introduce EU-wide recognition of return decisions, meaning migrants ordered to leave one member state could be deported by another. It would also expand the use of detention while deportations are organized, allowing detention periods of up to 24 months.
Furthermore, the text opens the possibility for deportation centers in third countries under agreements with EU states and introduces stricter entry bans and enforcement measures. …

Polish MEP Ewa Zajączkowska-Hernik also celebrated the result. “Such joy after the European Parliament committee voted in favor of regulations allowing for more effective return of illegal immigrants from the EU,” she said.
“The ‘Regulation establishing a common system for the return of third-country nationals staying illegally in the EU’ is another victory for the right wing in the European Parliament. Citizen safety is paramount,” she added.

EU Parliament ready to approve deportation bill as EPP teams up with far right for stricter rules
A law enabling detention centres built outside the EU to accelerate the return of irregular migrants has been approved at committee level, splitting Parliament’s traditional majority.
The European Parliament will vote soon on a law aiming to increase returns of irregular migrants, also through controversial deportation centers outside the EU, detentions up to two years, and raids on homes that NGOs compare to US-style ICE’s methods.
