Trump makes history: First U.S. president to call the nation to Shabbat
For the first time in American history, a sitting president has called on the entire nation to observe Shabbat. In a White House proclamation signed May 4, 2026, as part of Jewish American Heritage Month, President Donald Trump designated the period from sundown Friday, May 15, through nightfall Saturday, May 16, as a national Shabbat, dubbed “Shabbat 250”, in honor of the 250th anniversary of American independence. The move sent shockwaves through Jewish and Christian communities alike, and for those who know their Talmud, the implications stretch far beyond a single weekend.
Invoking President George Washington’s celebrated 1790 letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island, in which Washington wrote that the United States “gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance,” Trump tied the founding promise of America directly to its Jewish citizens. …

This Jewish American Heritage Month, we honor the countless contributions of Jewish Americans throughout our Nation’s 250 glorious years of independence, and we celebrate their unwavering commitment to the values that make our country great — faith, family, and freedom.
In his letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1790, President George Washington beautifully said, “May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while everyone shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.” Since the earliest days of our Republic, Jewish Americans have helped build the cause of liberty and sustain the greatness of our Nation. Among them was the iconic Haym Salomon, an early supporter of the war for independence. As stories tell us, Salomon was instrumental in the success of our Continental Congress and Founding Fathers, and rallied support for freedom. He was a zealous advocate against tyranny, and even after imprisonment by the British Crown, he continued his work in defense of freedom. In the end, he gave everything to the success of the American Revolution. Like so many Jewish Americans who follow in his footsteps, Salomon’s legacy stands as a testament to the unshakable belief in the American promise.
In the same letter to the Hebrew Congregation at Newport, President Washington proclaimed that the United States “gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.” Under my leadership, we are aggressively fighting the violence against Jewish Americans that increased under my predecessor, prosecuting hateful criminals to the fullest extent of the law, and working to end the scourge of anti-Semitism throughout our institutions, especially on college campuses. As President, I will never stop fighting to protect our birthright of religious freedom — a sacred right that continues to guide our Nation, drawing us closer to the Almighty each and every day.
Throughout this historic year, we rejoice in the triumph of the American spirit and rededicate ourselves to the cause of liberty and justice for all. In special honor of 250 glorious years of American independence and on the weekend of Rededicate 250 — a national jubilee of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving — Jewish Americans are encouraged to observe a national Sabbath. This day will recognize the sacred Jewish tradition of setting aside time for rest, reflection, and gratitude to the Almighty.

While the Sabbath should be kept every week, it is nice that there has been national acknowledgement of it.
Yet, the Sabbath itself, is not a Jewish thing, it is a command of God:
3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made (Genesis 2:3)
11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it (Exodus 20:11).
13 If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the LORD honorable (Isaiah 58:13).
And although some will discount the above because those verses are in the Hebrew scriptures known as the Old Testament, notice what the New Testament instructs Christians using five Protestant (including three ‘literal’), one Eastern Orthodox, and three Roman Catholic translations:
3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.'” And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. 4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “And on the seventh day God rested from all his work.” 5 And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.” 6 It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience…9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience (Hebrews 4:3-6,9-11, NIV).

Now God’s work was all finished at the beginning of the world; 4 as one text says, referring to the seventh day: And God rested on the seventh day after all the work he had been doing. 5 And, again, the passage above says: They will never reach my place of rest. 6 It remains the case, then, that there would be some people who would reach it, and since those who first heard the good news were prevented from entering by their refusal to believe … 9 There must still be, therefore, a seventh-day rest reserved for God’s people, 10 since to enter the place of rest is to rest after your work, as God did after his. 11 Let us, then, press forward to enter this place of rest, or some of you might copy this example of refusal to believe and be lost. Thus, the New Testament clearly shows that the command to keep the seventh day Sabbath is in the New Testament.
The late Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last year, was not brought up as a Sabbath-keeper, but later started to keep it. Shortly before he was killed, he had written a book titled, Stop in the Name of God. It was released several months ago and became a ‘best seller’.

Stop in the Name of God
Prior to his death Charlie Kirk wrote a book titled Stop in the Name of God. The subtitle to his book is Why Honoring the Sabbath Will Transform Your Life. In this book Mr. Kirk argues that it is more important than ever before to observe the 7th day Sabbath. Does it really make any difference what day someone goes to church? Mrs. Kirk, Charlie’s wife, stated on Fox News that “you don’t want to make it legalistic”. Does it make a difference if the Sabbath is THE 7th day of the week (Saturday), or can the Sabbath be just ANY day of the week, Sunday for example? Charlie Kirk was explicit in his belief that THE sabbath was the 7th day of the week. Dr. Thiel shows from the pages of the Bible that there is a right way and a wrong way to do things. Choosing to observe the 7th day sabbath is an example of the right way. Where did the 7th day Sabbath come from anyway? Was the Sabbath created? If so, how was it created and Who created it? God created the 7th day sabbath by resting. The Sabbath is God’s rest. We are invited to enter His rest by honoring and observing the 7th day Sabbath. Dr. Thiel also points out that the Apostles kept the 7th day Sabbath and quotes Hebrews 4 verses 3 through 6, that God proclaims there will be those that SHALL NOT ENTER HIS REST. Then in verse 9 God encourages us to enter His rest while the opportunity still exists. Watch this video as Dr. Thiel shines the light of Biblical understanding on the truth of the true Sabbath and listen as the word of God encourages us to enter His rest. Don’t wait until the opportunity passes you by.
