Trump warns Taiwan against declaring independence, hours after summit with China’s Xi
16 May 2026
US President Donald Trump has cautioned Taiwan against formally declaring independence from China.
“I’m not looking to have somebody go independent,” the US president told Fox News on Friday, at the end of his two-day summit with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has previously stated that Taiwan does not need to declare formal independence because it already sees itself as a sovereign nation. …
On the flight back to Washington, the US president had told reporters that he and Xi had spoken “a lot” about the island, but said he had declined to discuss whether the US would defend it.
Xi “feels very strongly” about the island and “doesn’t want to see a movement for independence”, Trump said.
“The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations,” Xi warned during the talks, according to Chinese state media, adding: “If mishandled, the two nations could collide or even come into conflict.”
Asked if he foresaw a conflict with China over Taiwan, Trump had said: “No, I don’t think so. I think we’ll be fine. [Xi] doesn’t want to see a war.” …
Trump also told Fox News: “We’re not looking to have wars, and if you kept it the way it is, I think China’s going to be OK with that. But we’re not looking to have somebody say, ‘Let’s go independent because the United States is backing us.'”
The US has previously provoked anger from China for seeming to soften its stance on independence.
Its State Department dropped a statement from its website reiterating Washington’s opposition to Taiwanese independence in February 2025 – something Beijing said “sends a wrong… signal to separatist forces”. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ce8p61v7l68o

President Donald Trump said he is undecided about whether he will approve a planned $14 billion arms sale to Taiwan, casting doubt on U.S. support for the self-governing island that China has committed to controlling.
Trump’s comments follow a two-day state visit to China, where he met with the country’s president, Xi Jinping, to discuss economic cooperation between the two global rivals, as well as a host of international issues, …
“I may do it. I may not do it,” he told Fox News’ Bret Baier in an interview that was recorded in Beijing and aired after he left. “We’re not looking to have wars. If you kept it the way it is, I think China is [going to] be OK with that. But we’re not looking to have somebody say, ‘Let’s go independent because the United States is backing us.’”
Taiwan has been waiting for months for Trump to approve a $14 billion weapons package that would help it defend against a Chinese military operation to capture the island. The package includes air-defense systems and sophisticated missiles. Trump approved an $11 billion arms package last year, prompting increased Chinese military drills around Taiwan.
But Trump’s comments suggest his Administration’s support for Taiwan, which China has threatened to take control of by force if necessary, is negotiable, and may be softened in return for economic deals with Beijing.
The U.S. does not formally recognize Beijing’s claim to Taiwan, nor does it recognize Taiwan’s independence. It has, however, supported the island for decades through defense assistance.

Trump Turns Taiwan Arms Sales Into Bargaining Chip With China
The president said a potential arms deal for Taiwan was a “very good negotiating chip” in talks with Beijing. His words raise questions about the steadfastness of U.S. support.
May 16, 2026
President Trump has described a potential multibillion-dollar weapons sale to Taiwan as a “negotiating chip” with China, raising new doubts about the pace and scale of American military support for the island democracy.
Taiwan’s government has been waiting months for Mr. Trump to sign off on a $14 billion package of missiles, anti-drone equipment and air-defense systems intended to fortify the island against Beijing’s military threats.
Mr. Trump himself had pressured Taiwan to spend more on its own defense. Now he is using the very arms his administration had pushed the island to buy as leverage with China, the United States’ main adversary. … By saying his approval of the arms deal “depends on China,” Mr. Trump seemed to be suggesting that the ball now lay in its court. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/16/world/asia/trump-taiwan-arms-bargaining-chip-china.html

President Trump’s ambiguous stance on Taiwan and arms sales is raising questions about future U.S. support for Taipei in the aftermath of the summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. …
He also notably did not commit to a $14 billion arms deal with Taiwan. He said that topic was discussed with Xi “in great detail” before saying he will “make a determination over the next fairly short period.”
The vague messaging sync with what many have described as Washington’s long position of “strategic ambiguity” on Taiwan. However it also comes after an extraordinary warning by Xi to Trump behind closed doors where he suggested the island nation is key when it comes to U.S.-Chinese relations.
Critics say Trump’s comments could have violated one of the “Six Assurances” made to Taiwan in 1982 by former President Ronald Reagan, which included Washington agreeing “not to consult with China” on arms sales to the island nation.
“Stating that the president of the United States is commenting on or discussing potential weapons sales to Taiwan with Beijing violates one of the ‘Six Assurances’ that President Reagan gave Taiwan and really does cross a line in terms of moving away from strategic ambiguity to allowing Beijing to have influence over U.S. policy toward the island,” said Jack Burnham, an analyst at the Foundation for Defense and Democracies. …
Under the U.S. “One China” policy, the U.S. acknowledges Beijing’s argument that Taiwan is a part of China but does not endorse this position. The U.S. does maintain relations with Taiwan and has provided it with defense and economic support. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5880675-china-taiwan-trump-policy/
What is the US policy on Taiwan?
The USA officially has a “One China policy”–meaning that it officially does not recognize Taiwan as independent from China.
Yet an issue here is USA and lack of loyalty to allies as well as hypocrisy.
China’s leader wants the USA to come out and support the actual meaning of “one China,” and the USA does not want to as it does not really stand behind that principle, which is supposed to be its official policy. The US has long had trade and other connections to Taiwan, plus it has long sold the Taiwanese weapons–something that China does not like.
China believes that there is one China and that Taiwan is part of China.
That said, notice something from the old Plain Truth magazine, February 1878 edition:
U.S. Ally To Be Abandoned? …
In the eyes of many of the … Chinese living on Taiwan, the handwriting is on the wall. The months and years ahead are to be filled with increased anxiety and concern over the future of their prosperous island republic, which lies just one hundred miles off the coast of Communist mainland China. The reason for their concern is obvious. The United States has embarked upon a clear course to come to complete terms with the government of the People’s Republic in Peking …
The Chinese on Taiwan, however, are justifiably convinced that a weak-kneed congressional “resolution of concern” would be no replacement for a defense pact in time of war. Furthermore, Peking, which views the Taiwan question as strictly an “internal matter” would probably never give- and certainly would never bind itself to-any such promises of nonbelligerence. If the United States were to go back on its commitment to Taiwan, Dr. Tsai asked us, how would America’s other allies, who are bound to similar treaties, react? What would the word of the United States be worth? What would be the impact upon Australia and New Zealand (linked with the U.S. in the ANZUS pact), Japan, the Philippines, Israel, and the NATO alliance?
American credibility, Dr. Tsai warned , could suffer a blow from which it would never recover- a credibility loss not only in the eyes of its allies, but also in those of its enemies. Does the U.S . have the strength and the will to keep its word , he asked? …
Many Taiwanese see Washington’s seemingly irrational policy of pursuing relations with Peking on Peking’s own terms as a policy of appeasement- a policy which will encourage Communist Chinese aggression in the same way Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement of Hitler encouraged Nazi aggression.
Well yes, the USA is willing to abandon/betray Taiwan as an ally.
Furthermore, the USA has been losing credibility with its allies for some time. And this has greatly accelerated during the second Trump Administration.
Notice something out of Germany:

“The Trump government is undoubtedly damaging the reputation of the US in the world, there are considerable doubts in the reliability of the US these days,” the SPD’s Dirk Wiese told the German dpa news agency on Saturday. https://www.dw.com/en/germany-news-nearly-half-the-country-wants-governing-conservative-coalition-out/live-77178633
Consistent with the following prophecy, the USA is turning friends into enemies:
1 How lonely sits the city
That was full of people!
How like a widow is she,
Who was great among the nations!
The princess among the provinces
Has become a slave!2 She weeps bitterly in the night,
Her tears are on her cheeks;
Among all her lovers
She has none to comfort her.
All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies. (Lamentations 1:1-2)
While Taiwan will continue to try to have military ties with the United States, that will prove to be a false hope.
Despite the views of many in Taiwan, Taiwan will end up under China’s control.
China does have the military ability to take over Taiwan. And it has repeatedly made it clear that it expects Taiwan to reunify.
China has been biding its time, while also planning various ways to get Taiwan to reunify with it.
Since no later than 2009, I have posted on this COGwriter Church of God New page my position that Taiwan will end up aligning with China.
Why?
Because of certain biblical prophecies such as the following:
12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. (Revelation 16:12)
Taiwan is even further east, an earlier ‘sunrise’ location, than China.
Plus, China is clear that it wants Taiwan.
Despite what Taiwan’s current leaders may say, Taiwan will align with the PRC. It may end up doing so without a military conflict. One possible reason could be that after the USA is conquered (which will happen per Daniel 11:39; Isaiah 10:5-11; Habakkuk 2:6-8), many of the Tawainese will conclude that unification and reconciliation with China is their safest move.
Yes, YOU can rely on properly interpreted biblical prophecies and world events are aligning with them.
