Why was John Exiled to Patmos?

Dr Thiel discusses reports that the Apostle John was taken from Ephesus to Rome during the reign of Emperor Domitian and was ordered to be boiled in oil. He cites accounts attributed to Polycarp and Tertullian that state John survived unharmed. According to these reports, Domitian then exiled John to the island of Patmos rather than executing him. Dr Thiel notes that many dismiss these accounts but states that he believes the event occurred.

When he was fairly old he was reportedly taken to Rome from Ephesus and he was ordered to be boiled in oil by Emperor Domitian. Now I'm gonna read you a couple of accounts. One is that uh supposedly from Polycarp said "It also is read that the Blessed John had been plunged into that of boiling oil in the name of Christ." Now one recent from Tertullian "Rome When Paul wins his crown in a death like John's where the Apostle John was first plunged unhurt into boiling oil and hence remitted to his island exile." So basically there's a report that Domitian wanted John to die He put him in boiling oil he didn't die So what to do with him. Get rid of him. Send him far away. So that's when he sent him to Patmos and then after Domitian died he went to back to Ephesus. Now there's a lot of people dismiss the idea that John was uh plunged in oil I think he was.
